Here is list of some of the symptoms you might experience in perimenopause.
Heart Palpitations, hot flushes, hair loss, night sweats, irregular periods, migraines and headaches, loss of labido, vaginal dryness, weight gain, uterine fibroids and aching joints. It is not a great read, is it?
Then add in mood swings, memory loss, irritability, anxiety, depression and insomnia and it gets even worse.
So when you visit your GP with any of these symptoms they can be misinterpreted as individual ailments. Not as part of the hormonal change that is starting, the perimenopause. NICE have produced a set of guidelines on menopausal symptoms for health professionals to aid the correct diagnosis. Sometimes they still get it wrong and offer drugs for each condition.
You could be prescribed medications ranging from ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, antidepressant, HRT, blood pressure medications, sleeping tablets, Mirena coil, IUD, oestrogen creams, statins, alendronic acid, calcium or Vit D through to procedures such as a hysterectomy or myomectomy. This is not a great read either.
If you want to avoid a mix of long term medications why not try some alternative therapies? Homeopathy is definitely worth considering. Homeopathy is holistic, looks at all of you, whilst still taking into account what symptoms are causing the most problem. In randomised and observational trials it has been seen to reduce menopausal symptoms like hot flushes and depression.
